Butterbase

Butterbase gives AI applications a complete backend they can run themselves, from a dedicated PostgreSQL database for every app to an MCP server that lets agents operate that backend directly. Define schemas declaratively, apply migrations, protect rows with Row-Level Security policies, and call the generated REST endpoints without building a separate data API. Add email and OAuth sign-in with Google, GitHub, Apple, X, and other providers, then tune JWT behavior, post-login hooks, service keys, and API keys for each application. Store files in S3 or R2 compatible object storage with presigned URLs and access controls, and keep regional key-value data with TTLs and an audit trail. Run TypeScript functions on Deno, coordinate chat rooms or rate limiters as durable per-key objects, and stream table changes to live interfaces over WebSocket subscriptions. Route chat and embedding calls through one AI gateway, ingest documents into RAG collections, and build checkpointed agent workflows that can pause for human approval before continuing. Host static frontends and edge handlers, expose webhooks for application events, and manage schemas, storage, functions, realtime channels, and integrations through more than forty MCP tools. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. Apache-2.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • One Backend For AI Apps
  • PostgreSQL, authentication, storage, functions, realtime events, RAG, and an AI gateway arrive together, so application teams can launch without assembling and maintaining separate backend services for every capability.
  • Real PostgreSQL Without Lock-In
  • Each application receives its own PostgreSQL database with declarative schemas, migrations, Row-Level Security, generated REST endpoints, and portable data that remains inspectable with ordinary database tools.
  • Agents Can Operate It
  • More than forty MCP tools expose apps, schemas, users, functions, storage, RAG, realtime channels, durable objects, and integrations, allowing compatible AI clients to build and administer backends directly.
  • Self-Host The Data Plane
  • Docker Compose runs the control API, PostgreSQL planes, Redis, PgBouncer, Deno runtime, and S3-compatible storage locally, keeping application data and execution on infrastructure you control.

Features

  • Per-App PostgreSQL Databases
  • Declarative schemas and migrations create a dedicated PostgreSQL database per application, with Row-Level Security policies and automatically generated REST endpoints for data access.
  • Authentication And API Keys
  • Email sign-in and OAuth providers including Google, GitHub, Apple, and X combine with JWT settings, post-login hooks, service keys, and scoped API keys.
  • Deno Serverless Functions
  • TypeScript functions execute on the Deno runtime, while durable per-key objects support chat rooms, multiplayer state, rate limiters, and long-running application workflows.
  • Realtime And KV
  • WebSocket subscriptions stream PostgreSQL table changes to live clients, and the regional key-value store adds TTL expiry, quotas, audit records, and dashboard exposure rules.
  • AI Gateway And RAG
  • One gateway handles chat, embeddings, and model listing, while managed RAG collections ingest documents for semantic search and synthesized, source-backed answers.
  • MCP Backend Tools
  • The built-in MCP server exposes more than forty tools for schemas, migrations, rows, functions, storage, frontends, integrations, billing, audit logs, and application administration.
