Galene

Galene is a self-hosted video conferencing system that runs full meetings, lectures, and tutorials in the browser while asking remarkably little of the server it runs on. Every group gets its own page with video tiles, a user list, and a chat pane, and participants join from desktop or mobile browsers with nothing to install. Presenters share a screen or individual windows, stream a video or audio file straight from disk, and switch to blackboard mode when a slide needs resolution more than frame rate. Moderators can warn or remove participants and lock the group, raise-hand status keeps question queues orderly, and anyone can blur their background or exchange files directly with peers. Groups are simple configuration files: set public or private rooms, passwords or login tokens, client limits, and expiry windows, then create users with moderator or presenter privileges using the galenectl command. Automatic subgroups spin up identical breakout rooms on demand, the pattern its author uses to supervise forty students working in pairs during computer science practicals. Calls stay smooth on poor networks because the server adapts video quality per participant, recovers lost packets, and relays media through its built-in TURN server when firewalls block direct paths. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. MIT licensed.

Benefits

  • Featherweight Server Footprint
  • Written as a single efficient Go service with dynamic buffer tuning, Galene hosts lectures and meetings on modest hardware where heavier conferencing stacks would need a dedicated machine and constant attention.
  • Rooms Without The Fuss
  • Groups are small configuration files created with one galenectl command, can be public or password protected, expire on schedule, and generate automatic subgroups for classes, workshops, and breakout sessions.
  • Teaching Tools Built In
  • Raise-hand status, blackboard mode for crisp slides, streaming from on-disk media files, and sessions that universities have run in production for lectures, practicals, seminars, and staff meetings since 2020.
  • Private By Architecture
  • Traffic is encrypted between each participant and your server, chat history is never written to disk and erases itself after four hours, and recordings happen only in groups that explicitly allow them.

Features

  • WebRTC SFU Core
  • A Go selective forwarding unit relays arbitrary audio and video streams with simulcast, VP8 and VP9 scalable video coding, NACK loss recovery, and continuous bandwidth estimation for low latency.
  • Built-In TURN Server
  • An integrated TURN server relays media for participants behind strict firewalls, so calls connect without renting a separate relay or opening complex NAT configurations.
  • Screen And File Sharing
  • Participants share a screen or multiple windows, stream video and audio files from disk, blur backgrounds, and transfer files peer-to-peer during the call.
  • Recording To Disk
  • Groups that enable it can record sessions straight to server disk, giving lecturers and teams a local archive without sending media to cloud services.
  • HTTP Administration API
  • An administrative API over HTTP plus the galenectl command manage groups, users, and passwords, with password or OAuth2-style token authorization for joining.
