OpenNebula

One front-end server can run your entire cloud: OpenNebula orchestrates KVM virtual machines and LXC containers across clusters of hosts, presenting everything through the FireEdge Sunstone web interface and a full API. Operators define VM templates once and instantiate them anywhere, attaching disks and networks, taking snapshots, scheduling actions, and opening remote consoles through Guacamole without leaving the browser. The OneDRS distributed resource scheduler reads historical and real-time metrics to predict demand spikes and migrate workloads before contention bites, with customizable policies and automation levels. GPU passthrough and PCI device hotplugging serve AI and accelerator workloads, while OVA import through the oneswap command ingests virtual machines exported from VMware vCenter for re-virtualization projects. Edge Clusters deploy on demand on premises or at remote providers, extending the same management model to hybrid and distributed sites without a separate stack. The 7.4 Helix release redesigns Sunstone with a slide-in side drawer and richer resource visualizations, and brings OneKS managed Kubernetes plus LVM storage to the Community Edition. Ceph and LVM datastores, incremental backups, cluster-level and generic quotas for resources like vGPUs, and OneFlow service orchestration for multi-VM applications round out daily operations. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. Apache-2.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Cloud Control From One Front-End
  • A single OpenNebula front-end orchestrates hosts, datastores, networks, and images for a whole cloud, persisted in SQL. Small teams run production private clouds without a fleet of management services to babysit.
  • Predictive Workload Balancing
  • OneDRS analyzes historical and real-time metrics to anticipate demand spikes and migrate virtual machines proactively. Customizable policies and automation levels keep clusters balanced without constant operator intervention.
  • VMware Exit Ramp
  • Import OVA exports from VMware vCenter with the oneswap command, then run them on KVM with GPU passthrough and modern storage backends. Re-virtualization projects keep existing workloads instead of rebuilding them.
  • Edge and Hybrid Reach
  • Deploy Edge Clusters on demand at remote sites or providers and manage them with the same templates and policies as the core cloud. Distributed infrastructure stays one system, not a patchwork of consoles.

Features

  • Sunstone Web Interface
  • Manage VMs, templates, virtual routers, and services from the FireEdge Sunstone UI with role-based views for admins and cloud users. Real-time dashboards and labels keep large estates navigable.
  • GPU and PCI Hotplug
  • Attach GPU passthrough and PCI devices to running workloads for AI training and accelerator jobs, with NUMA-aware PCIe topology for pinned machines. Generic quotas can even govern vGPU consumption.
  • OneFlow Service Orchestration
  • Compose multi-VM services with elasticity rules and deployment ordering, improved in 7.0 for AI workflows and batch deployments. Whole application stacks start, scale, and stop as one unit.
  • Flexible Storage Backends
  • Run datastores on Ceph, LVM, NFS, or local storage with incremental Ceph backups and full LVM backup support. Storage choices follow each cluster's performance and budget requirements.
  • Template Profiles and Marketplace
  • Ship VM template profiles with predefined deployment settings and pull ready appliances from the OpenNebula Marketplace, including ARM64 images. Standard images roll out identically across every cluster.
