RustXNG

RustXNG gives your AI agents a private web search API that needs no keys, no accounts, and no per-search fees: ask once and get ranked results plus the text of the top pages, ready to ground an answer in real sources. A single request fans out to 180 search engines in parallel, drawn from 226 engine types covering general web, images, video, academic literature, package registries, and news, then merges what comes back with its own ranking that rewards term coverage and canonical-site authority instead of trusting any one engine's order. Engines that time out or keep answering nothing are suspended with backoff and rested automatically, so one dead source never stalls a task, and a repeated query returns from cache in about a hundredth of a second. Call it over HTTP with the familiar SearXNG-shaped JSON, CSV, RSS, or HTML formats, narrow results by domain, engine, or time range, or run the built-in MCP server and hand your agent native search and read_page tools with bounded, truncation-aware responses. Page fetches are hardened against untrusted URLs, an experimental local index can crawl your own corpus and merge it into results, and health, metrics, and per-engine status stay visible through the ops endpoints and the browser UI. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. AGPL-3.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Keyless Search For Your Agents
  • Agents get web search with no API keys, accounts, or per-search billing: one keyless request fans out to 180 engines and returns ranked results your model can cite instead of guessing.
  • Grounding Text In One Request
  • The same response can carry the fetched text of the top pages, roughly 32,000 characters across five pages, so an agent can answer from sources without a second retrieval step.
  • Built To Survive Dead Engines
  • Per-engine timeouts, suspension with backoff, and automatic resting keep one failing source from stalling a task, while repeated queries answer from cache in about a hundredth of a second.
  • Hardened Against Untrusted URLs
  • Page and image fetching resolves public addresses only behind an SSRF guard, so agents can read arbitrary result links without reaching your internal network services.

Features

  • 226 Engine Types
  • Ports of SearXNG engines give 352 settings entries across web, image, video, academic, package, and news sources, with 180 enabled by default and per-engine selection per request.
  • MCP Server Built In
  • Running rustxng mcp serves read-only search and read_page tools over stdio, with five results and 500-character snippets by default and bounded responses that report truncation.
  • SearXNG-Compatible JSON API
  • The /search endpoint answers in JSON, CSV, RSS, or HTML with domain include and exclude filters, engine selection, time ranges, and optional raw page content per result.
  • Re-Ranking And Deduplication
  • Results are merged and re-scored by term coverage, canonical-site authority, and identifier matches such as RFC numbers, with thumbnail-free deduplication instead of raw engine ordering.
  • Ops Endpoints And Metrics
  • /healthz reports process health, /metrics exposes OpenMetrics, /config lists registered engines, and the browser UI on the same port shows the fleet of engines.
