Zimi

When the internet goes away, your library does not have to: Zimi serves Kiwix ZIM archives of Wikipedia, books, videos and forums through a rich web interface, with one search box querying every archive across more than 100 million articles. Each content type gets its own app: Zimipedia for wikis, the Dictionary for Wiktionary, Bookshelf for books, ZimiTube for video, ZimiExchange for Q&A, Reddot for subreddits and offline street Maps. Bookmarks, lists, likes and highlights live in every app and sync across devices when you sign in, and any article can switch into whichever language edition you hold. The library manages itself: browse the Kiwix catalog of over 1,000 archives, download with one click, let auto-updates keep editions fresh, and seed downloads over BitTorrent with a ratio cap you set. Zimi servers on the same network find each other and pass archives at LAN speed, and one offline switch turns off every internet-bound feature for air-gapped rooms. You can also make your own ZIMs from a web page, a whole site, a video playlist or a folder of files. Access ranges from public to sign-in only with per-archive allowlists, and the JSON API plus MCP server let AI agents search the same library. Docker runs Zimi on port 8899 with your ZIM files and config mounted as volumes. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. GPL-3.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Knowledge that survives outages
  • Wikipedia, books, videos and forums stay searchable and readable with no internet connection at all, which suits schools, clinics, ships, field sites and homes preparing for the next long outage.
  • One search, every archive
  • A single query runs across all your ZIM files and more than 100 million articles, with exact-phrase, exclusion, language and source filters, so answers surface without opening each archive separately.
  • A library that maintains itself
  • Browse the 1,000-plus archive Kiwix catalog, download in one click, enable auto-updates, and let nearby Zimi servers share files over the LAN instead of re-downloading them from the internet.
  • Readable by people and agents
  • The web apps serve readers while the JSON API and MCP server give AI agents the same search, article text and RAG-ready chunks, all from your own offline collection.

Features

  • Cross-ZIM search engine
  • Full-text search over every mounted archive with phrase, exclusion, OR, language and source operators, plus title autocomplete through the /search and /suggest endpoints.
  • Apps for each format
  • Zimipedia, Dictionary, Bookshelf, ZimiTube, ZimiExchange, Reddot and Maps give wikis, books, video, Q&A, forums and street maps interfaces shaped for their content.
  • BitTorrent and Nearby sharing
  • In-process libtorrent downloads seed back with a configurable ratio cap, while mDNS discovery lets Zimi servers on a LAN exchange archives at local speed.
  • Make your own ZIMs
  • Capture a single page, an entire site, a video playlist, a subreddit, a web archive or a folder of files into new ZIM archives from the web interface.
  • API and MCP access
  • OpenAPI JSON endpoints return articles, chunks for RAG and catalog data, and the FastMCP server exposes the same library to AI agents over stdio.
