Icinga 2

Servers, services, and network gear report their health to Icinga 2, the open-source monitoring core that runs checks, evaluates thresholds, and decides who gets woken up. A distributed hierarchy of master, satellite, and agent zones scales from a single box to global estates: satellites execute checks in remote regions and keep working when the master is unreachable, while agents run local checks under TLS-secured, certificate-based trust. The object-based configuration language defines hosts, services, dependencies, and notification rules as code, with apply rules generating checks across whole groups automatically. Performance data streams into Graphite, InfluxDB, or Elasticsearch writers, and Icinga DB carries runtime state and history into Redis and SQL for the web frontends. The REST API drives acknowledgements, downtimes, and check scheduling from scripts and chat tools, with fine-grained permissions down to diagnostic information. The 2.16 line hardens API security, streams richer runtime updates to Icinga DB for the new Icinga Notifications 1.0 incident workflows, and lets operators set exact acknowledgement times through the API. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. GPL-3.0-or-later licensed.

Benefits

  • Distributed Zones Architecture
  • Master, satellite, and agent zones distribute check execution across regions and networks with TLS certificate trust between parents and children. Remote sites keep monitoring locally even when the link to headquarters drops.
  • Configuration As Code
  • An object-based DSL with templates and apply rules generates thousands of checks from compact definitions stored in version control. Onboarding a new host class becomes a rule, not a copy-paste marathon.
  • Notifications With Context
  • Dependency-aware alerting suppresses downstream noise during outages while escalations and time periods route problems to the right people. Integration with Icinga Notifications 1.0 adds schedules, incidents, and delivery confirmation.
  • Fully API-Driven Operations
  • Acknowledge problems, schedule downtimes, and trigger checks through a permission-scoped REST API with exact acknowledgement times. ChatOps bots and deployment pipelines manage monitoring state programmatically.

Features

  • High Availability Clusters
  • Run two nodes per zone in active HA so a failed master or satellite never blinds the estate. Cluster state, check results, and configuration replicate between zone members automatically.
  • Performance Data Writers
  • Stream metrics to Graphite, InfluxDB, or Elasticsearch with template tags for hosts and services added in recent releases. Long-term graphs and capacity reports build on the same check results.
  • Icinga DB Integration
  • Push runtime updates and history through Redis into SQL storage consumed by Icinga DB Web, HA-aware in the 2.16 line. State changes, downtimes, and acknowledgements stay consistent across frontends.
  • Livestatus and Check Plugins
  • Reuse the vast Nagios-compatible plugin ecosystem for checks, from hardware sensors to application-specific probes. Existing plugin investments carry over without rewrites.
  • Fine-Grained API Permissions
  • Scope API users to specific actions, objects, and filters, with diagnostic information gated behind its own permission since 2.16.6. Automation gets exactly the access it needs and nothing more.
