Universal Media Server

Every screen in the house (browser, TV, game console, or phone) can open the same library of videos, music, and photos once Universal Media Server shares it, with transcoding handled automatically for whichever device asks. A file the device can already play passes through untouched. Anything else is converted on the fly to suit the network, the device, and the preferred language. Folders open at once, with no wait for library scans, and disc drives and disc images play directly. In the web interface, every title gets a page with cover art, cast, and genre details from TMDB, Discogs, and MusicBrainz, and filters narrow the library by actor, director, genre, year, or artist. YouTube channels, online radio, podcasts, and RSS feeds appear beside local files on every connected device. Users and groups, with optional avatars and four-digit PINs, decide which shared folders each person sees; content for children stays apart from the library for adults. A list of detected renderers shows every connected device, and the configuration file of each device can be edited to fix browsing, playback, or transcoding on an unsupported TV. Builds exist for Windows, Linux, and macOS, with AppImage and Docker options for servers. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. GPL-2.0 licensed.

Universal Media Server

Benefits

  • One Library for Every Device
  • Browsers, TVs, game consoles, speakers, and phones browse the same folders. DLNA, UPnP, and HTTP(S) cover the protocols, so each device connects with the client it already has.
  • Transcoding Only When Needed
  • Compatible files stream untouched, while incompatible ones are converted on the fly using FFmpeg and other engines to match the network, the device, and the language preference.
  • Metadata Without Waiting for Scans
  • Folders open instantly while background scans run, and TMDB, Discogs, and MusicBrainz lookups add cover art and details that make filtering by actor, genre, or year practical.
  • Separate Profiles for Each Person
  • Groups and users, optionally protected by four-digit PINs, restrict shared folders per person, so children, guests, and adults each see only the library assigned to them.

Features

  • DLNA and UPnP Streaming
  • Serves video, audio, and images to televisions, audio devices, gaming consoles, computers, and smartphones over DLNA and UPnP, with bundled renderer configuration files for many devices.
  • Browser Web Interface
  • A browser-based interface for browsing, filtering, and playing media directly from the browser or sending it to a connected device, served over HTTP(S) on port 9001.
  • FFmpeg Transcoding Engines
  • Converts incompatible media on demand with FFmpeg, MEncoder, VLC, tsMuxeR, and AviSynth, while MediaInfo reads each file's format details.
  • Online Media Sources
  • Adds YouTube channels, online radio channels, podcasts, and RSS feeds to the library, so streaming sources appear on every connected device next to local files.
  • Users, Groups, and PINs
  • Account management creates users and groups, assigns shared folders by group, and adds optional avatars and four-digit PINs for switching profiles in the web player.
  • Docker and Native Installs
  • Runs from Windows, Linux, and macOS installers, an AppImage, or the universalmediaserver/ums Docker image for amd64 and arm64, with host networking recommended for device discovery.
