Password Pusher
Credentials sitting forever in email threads and chat scrollback - Password Pusher solves that everyday security failure. Instead of pasting a password into Slack, you push it - a password, note, file, URL, or QR code - and share a unique one-time link that expires after a set number of views, a time limit, or both. Content is encrypted at rest with AES-GCM under a configurable master key, optionally guarded by a passphrase, and permanently deleted from the database the moment it expires; a retrieval-step option keeps URL-scanning bots from consuming views. Full audit logs record when each link was created and viewed (and by whom, with logins), and TOTP two-factor authentication can be required instance-wide. The delivery page is deliberately unbranded - no logos or confusing links for recipients - and the interface ships in 31 languages with light and dark themes. Automation runs through a JSON API (v2), an official CLI for pushing and expiring secrets from the terminal, a Chrome extension, and a catalog of third-party integrations. PsiTransfer
Upload files, get a share link, let it expire: PsiTransfer is a self-hosted WeTransfer with no accounts, no logins, and no third-party cloud with size caps and metadata harvesting. The engineering focus is large files over imperfect networks. Uploads use the tus.io resumable protocol, so a dropped connection on a multi-gigabyte video resumes exactly where it stopped once you're back online; downloads support HTTP range headers for the same resilience, and everything streams, so file size is bounded by your disk rather than memory. Files organize into upload buckets with retention you control: expire after a set time (up to weeks) or after a one-time download, with automatic cleanup when links lapse. Recipients need nothing installed - they open the link, preview files in modal views, and grab everything as a zip or tar.gz archive with one click. Buckets can be password-protected (AES-encrypted download lists), and security-through-obscurity is done properly: bucket URLs use hashed UUID tokens and stored filenames are replaced with UUIDs. An optional admin page (enabled by setting an admin password) lists bucket information and storage. The Vue.js frontend ships under 100 KB gzipped and is fully responsive. Shiori
Most web links eventually break - the sobering statistic Shiori, a bookmark manager with archiving by default, is built on. Its answer is archiving by default - where possible, every bookmark you save gets a clean, readable offline copy parsed from the page, ads and navigation stripped, so the article survives even after the original URL dies. Conceived as a simple Pocket clone and written in Go, the entire server is a single binary using roughly 25-30 MB of RAM with SQLite out of the box (Postgres and MySQL supported) - genuinely the lightest archiving bookmark manager you can run. Saving is one click through the Firefox and Chrome extensions, and finding things again is where Shiori quietly outperforms its size: full-text search covers the archived page content, not just titles and tags, so you can find that article by a phrase you remember from paragraph six. ByteStash
The functions, config files, and one-liners you keep re-deriving finally get a searchable home: ByteStash is a self-hosted code snippet manager - a private Gist. Each snippet holds multiple code fragments, so a Docker Compose file, its .env template, and a plaintext usage note live together under one titled, categorized entry. Monaco-based syntax highlighting covers dozens of languages, from Python, TypeScript, Go, and Rust to YAML, Dockerfiles, Terraform, and Markdown. Retrieval is the point: filter by language or category, search titles and descriptions, and optionally include snippet contents in full-text search. Snippets can be pinned for quick access and shared via public links that recipients open without an account. Multi-user support runs on JWT authentication with optional OIDC single sign-on for teams on centralized identity, and a full CRUD REST API with Swagger documentation wires snippet retrieval into editors, scripts, and CI pipelines. Bazarr
Subtitles are the one chore Sonarr and Radarr leave behind - Bazarr finishes the *arr media stack by automating them. It connects to both via their APIs and mirrors their libraries - it doesn't scan disk itself, it manages exactly what your *arr apps index. For every monitored episode and movie it checks existing internal and external subtitles against your language profiles, then hunts missing ones across dozens of providers - OpenSubtitles.com, Podnapisi, Addic7ed, Subscene, and many regional sources - covering 184 subtitle languages including forced/foreign-dialogue tracks. Matching is smarter than filename guessing: releases are compared by release group and source, some providers support exact file-hash matching, and every downloaded subtitle gets a percentage score. Set a minimum score per Sonarr/Radarr connection and Bazarr rejects weak matches; enable upgrades and it replaces previously downloaded subtitles when better ones surface. Out-of-sync files get fixed too - automatic subtitle synchronization realigns timing after download, triggered only below a configurable score threshold so good subs aren't touched. Per-show and per-movie language configuration, download history, manual on-demand search, and adaptive searching that throttles provider API calls round it out, all behind a clean Sonarr-style web UI written in Python. If your library serves multilingual viewers, this removes the last manual step.
Isso
Named from the German "Ich schrei sonst" - roughly "or I'll scream" - Isso is a lightweight Python/JavaScript commenting server, a drop-in Disqus replacement for people who noticed what Disqus does to reader privacy and page load times. The design premise is printed right in the docs: comments are not Big Data. So the backend is a single SQLite file rather than a database cluster, and the entire client is one embeddable JavaScript file - 65 kB, 20 kB gzipped - that you drop into any static site, blog, or CMS. Commenters write in Markdown, need no account, and can edit or delete their own comments within a configurable window (15 minutes by default). Spam control comes from an optional moderation queue: held comments stay invisible until you activate them via an admin interface or email notification links. OctoPrint
Over a million active instances make OctoPrint the standard web interface for consumer 3D printers - Gina Häußge's Python application, the center of the printing world since 2012. It talks to your printer over USB serial and turns every browser into a control panel: upload, organize, and start G-code prints; watch hotend and bed temperature graphs in real time; drive the print head manually; adjust feed rate, flow, and fan speed mid-print; and hit an emergency stop if things go wrong. The G-code visualizer renders the current layer in sync with the job, and a connected webcam adds a live feed plus automatic timelapse recording of every build. Octobox
What Gmail did for email, Octobox does for GitHub notifications: an ephemeral, unmanageable stream becomes an inbox you can actually triage. GitHub marks notifications read the moment you glance at them and lets old ones vanish days later; heavy maintainers end up building elaborate Gmail filter systems just to cope. Octobox - a Ruby on Rails app over PostgreSQL - syncs your notifications into a persistent inbox with an explicit archived state: mark a thread done, and if the issue or PR sees new activity, it pops back automatically, so nothing silently falls through. Triage is keyboard-driven with Gmail-style shortcuts (j/k to navigate, e to archive, m to mute, s to star), and multi-select clears noisy repositories in bulk. Hastebin
"Throw it on a haste and send the link" entered developer vocabulary because of Hastebin (haste-server), the minimalist open-source pastebin. Written in Node.js with three stated design goals - be really pretty, be really simple, be easy to set up - it does one job precisely: paste code, logs, stack traces, or config snippets, press save (or Ctrl+N for a new one), and get a short random-key URL to share. Syntax highlighting renders pastes readably across common languages, a raw view serves plain text for curl and scripts, and duplicate-and-edit makes iterating on a shared snippet trivial. The killer workflow is the terminal: with the haste-client utility or a one-line shell function, `cat error.log | haste` prints a shareable URL straight from stdout - the fastest route from a broken build to a colleague's eyeballs. Storage is pluggable through a simple adapter interface: filesystem by default, Redis with optional key expiration for pastes that should age out, and configurable key length, maximum paste size, and static documents. Self-hosting matters here because pastes often contain internal logs and stack traces that should never sit on a public pastebin - your instance keeps them inside your network, under your retention rules.
GoToSocial
Mastodon serves single-user and small-community instances poorly; GoToSocial, an ActivityPub server written in Go, was built precisely for them. Where Mastodon demands Ruby, PostgreSQL, Redis, and Sidekiq, GoToSocial is one binary using roughly 250-350 MiB of RAM with SQLite as the default database (PostgreSQL optional) - it runs comfortably on a $5 VPS or a repurposed laptop. Written in optimized C++ where competitors use Python or Java, NZBGet saturates fast connections while idling on CPU and RAM - which is why the performance-obsessed Usenet downloader has long been the client of choice for NAS boxes, Raspberry Pis, and routers as much as full servers. The engineering shows in the recovery pipeline. Instead of shelling out to par2cmdline, NZBGet integrates the par2 source directly and exploits its knowledge of exactly which articles failed - quick par-verification checks only what needs checking, and its own multicore repair implementation runs 2-3x faster than the external tool on the same hardware. Fast par-rename deobfuscates scrambled filenames in seconds without a full verification pass, and rar-rename recovers names for multivolume archives even when no par2 files exist. The CAPTCHA bargain - annoy your users and feed their behavior to Google - gets replaced with economics by mCaptcha. Instead of image puzzles, it uses SHA256 proof-of-work: every visitor's browser silently solves a small computational challenge (via a WebAssembly library) before submitting a form. Humans never notice the milliseconds; bots hammering your site must burn more compute sending requests than your server spends answering them, which makes attacks more expensive than defense - the property that also makes mCaptcha genuine DoS protection, not just bot filtering. It exists because the big public music bots kept getting shut down or paywalled, and self-hosting yours means nobody can take it away. Written in TypeScript on discord.js, it joins voice channels and plays audio resolved from YouTube via yt-dlp, and given optional Spotify API credentials it auto-converts Spotify tracks, albums, artists, and entire playlists to playable equivalents. The playback details show real care: seeking within songs and videos, livestream support, local caching so repeated plays start instantly, volume normalization across tracks, and configurable volume controls including optional ducking that lowers music when people speak. SponsorBlock integration can skip non-music segments automatically. Users save favorite queries as reusable shortcuts, and one Muse instance serves multiple guilds simultaneously - one deployment for all your communities. Live web search plus an LLM of your choice: Farfalle is an open-source, self-hosted answer engine in the Perplexity mold. Queries route through one of several search providers - self-hosted SearXNG for a fully independent stack, or Tavily, Serper, and Bing APIs - and the model composes a cited answer from the retrieved results. Model flexibility is the core design: run llama3, mistral, gemma, or phi3 locally through Ollama for zero per-query cost and full privacy, use cloud models like GPT-4o or Groq-hosted Llama 3 for speed, or route to any provider via LiteLLM. An Expert Search mode uses an agent that plans a multi-step search strategy and executes it for harder questions, and chat history keeps prior research sessions available.
